Roland Iten, the man behind the marque, has a passion for mechanical objects and a captivating aptitude for mechanics. This combined with his infinite invention capability and his keen eye for design, enables him to liberate mundane objects into the world of precision engineering, and in doing so, he has produced exceptional creations. His passion is rare, as he works with everyday items transforming them into precision perfect, mechanically performing objects that function with complete finesse. His simple vision-- to remain "Seriously Playful" in everything he does, allows Roland Iten to bring extraordinary character to belts, cufflinks and other men's accessories.
It is the mere question of thinking differently about solving the problem which spawns the creation of a Roland Iten product. Observing people's behaviours and how we follow the norm inspires him. Until Roland Iten designed the world's first complicated mechanical belt buckle in 2003, men had very little choice in wearable precious mechanics. By mechanising everyday items such as belts and cufflinks Roland has changed the market for men's accessories. "He offers the 'little boy' in all men – well-made, high value, individual, amusing and whimsical creations which transform ordinary items into mechanical wonders that solve problems most men didn't even know they had" (Nicholas Foulkes).
Roland loves the world of mechanical machinery and his product creations are inspired by the mechanical age of the aeroplane and the steam engine. He comes from a family of engineers but is not an engineer himself which works to his advantage. According to Roland: " When you know too much, you don't ask the questions which can ultimately breakthrough the obstacles of the product engineering process. I'm the guy next to the engineer telling him 'it will work', all the time he's telling me 'its impossible'. Its really a very intimate way to make a product. Then comes the considerable refinement phase- sometimes it takes six months to put back the elegance which was in the original design".
Every artisan and technician that works on a Roland Iten product has to be extremely skilled. The pieces and parts have to fit together exactly, with the highest quality and finishing. The interaction of the parts is the soul of each piece.
“Roland has changed the market for men's accessories. He offers the ‘little boy’ in all men well-made, high value, individual, amusing and whimsical creations which transform ordinary items into mechanical wonders that solve problems most men didn't even know they had. He is the ‘Leonardo Da Vinci’ of Luxury.”
